Richard Schurg Obituary

Richard Lee Schurg, 74, of Indian Head, passed away on Sunday October 26, 2025, at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg.

He was born July 25, 1951, in Connellsville, a son of the late Norman and Sylvia (Johnson) Schurg.

He was a graduate of Connellsville High School in the Class of 1970 and was a member of Buchanan Church of God.

Rich was employed through Seven Springs and Hidden Valley for 47 years as a groundskeeper, even working as a cashier and in the kitchen in the Tubing Center. He took great pride in his position there and the work he did. He continued to do landscaping for the Nutting Family after they sold Seven Springs and Hidden Valley, making the trip to Ligonier to make sure their landscapes were perfect at their home.

Rich was a member of the South Connellsville Fireman’s Club, the Connellsville Moose, and the Connellsville Eagles and he would help at the American Legion, Donegal.

He was an avid bingo player, enjoyed gardening (especially his beautiful flowers) and landscaping, and decorating for the holidays.

Rich was known for being the “Candy Apple King”. He would make both candy apples and cotton candy in Saltlick Twp. For their trick-or-treating events and just for anyone who would ask, including his favorite bingo ladies.

Rich is survived by his big, loving family: sisters, Rose Faidley and Carla Schurg-Stencel and husband Frank and his numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Rich was preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl (Gallentine) Schurg; daughter, McKenna Lee; sister, Ina Joann Schurg; brothers, Norman Edward ‘Eddie’ Schurg, and Walter Eugene ‘Gene’ Schurg, and his special friend whom he lived with for a time, Rick Shaw.
