George Geletko Obituary

George R. Geletko, 97, of Connellsville, passed away on Wednesday November 30, 2022 at Laurel Ridge Center, Uniontown.

He was born September 15, 1925 in Leisenring, a son of the late George and Mary (Yankovich) Geletko.

He attended St. John Catholic grade school and graduated from Dunbar Township High School with the Class of 1943. He then entered the U.S. Army during World War II and served with the 79th Infantry Division in Europe and received the following citations which included the Bronze Star Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Medal with a Silver Star for five campaigns namely Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe, Battle of the Bulge and Rhineland, the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the Combat Badge.

George retired from the City of Connellsville Fire Department with the rank of Assistant Fire Chief in 1978 after 30 years of service.  He then worked at V.W. Westmoreland for 10 years and retired in 1988.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Connellsville, was a life member of the New Haven Hose Fire Co., a member of the Fayette County Fireman’s Association, and he was also a life member of the VFW Post 21, Knights of Columbus Council 948, and the Slovak Club.

George enjoyed spending his winters in Florida being with his family and friends.

In his younger years, George loved to hunt and fish, but his true love was playing golf.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

George is survived by his son, Raymond Geletko and wife Ana of Davie, FL; daughter, Carol Ann of Charleston, WVa; two grandsons, Dustin and Shane of Davie, FL; special nephew and namesake, George R. Geletko and wife Sara of Melbourne, FL; many nieces and nephews, especially P.J. and Paulette; great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and two special cousins, Ruth Ann Yatsko and Mary Shemloff.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; brother, Paul and his two sisters, Mary Kiwala and Irene Bordas.

Funeral arrangements are under the care and supervision of the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME, INC. 418 North Pittsburgh Street Connellsville, PA 15425.

Family and friends will be received in the St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, Connellsville on Saturday from 9am until 11:30am when the New Haven Hose Fire Co. will hold a Memorial Ritual. The funeral Mass will immediately follow at Noon with Rev. Fr. Paul Lisik as Celebrant. 

Inurnment will follow at a later date in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville with full Military Honors.
