David Allen Calhoun, Sr., 58, of Champion, passed away on Friday March 22, 2024 at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center.
He was born October 5, 1965 in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Walter and Martha (Lowry) Calhoun.
Dave graduated from Connellsville High School in the Class of 1985 and immediately enter basic training for the United States Army.
He joined the United States Army National Guard in 1985 where he served for six years. In 1996, he joined the Army Reserves and served until 1998 when he decided to serve his Country in active duty. He was deployed to Iraq during Desert Storm/Desert Shield in 1991, Bosnia from 1998 to 1999 and to Kosovo for several months in 2000. His final deployment was during the Iraq for operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in 2002, where he served for 8 months until he was severely injured in a roadside bombing. He was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 2004.
Dave dedicated his life to the military and honoring all those who have served. He volunteered his time for Hunts for Healing and the Wounded Warriors Project. Dave was a member of the VFW Post 6743, Jones Mills and the Roadman-White American Legion, Donegal. When he lived in Florida, he served as Quartermaster for a number of years at his local VFW.
In his downtime, Dave was a true outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, even having the opportunity to have multiple of his hunting trips on TV.
Dave is survived by his wife of 20 years, Tara (Wilcox) Calhoun; children, David Calhoun Jr. (Ica), Shawn Calhoun (Allison), Josh Calhoun (Amanda), Shanna Calhoun (Nate), Dalton Curran (Hailey), Anna Calhoun (Randy), and Gavin Forney (Jasmyn); grandchildren, Malaina and Gracie Calhoun, Jacob David, David Calhoun III, Mallarie, Aiyana, and Clayton Gunner, Jazmyne, Jordyn, Kinley, and Brentley Calhoun, Kaitlin Noss, and Eli Latham; siblings, Beverly Shaffer (Phil), Kay Brown (Kenny), Margaret Firestone (George) and Walter Calhoun Jr. (Tawnee) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received in the PAUL G. FINK FUNERAL HOME, INC. 418 North Pittsburgh Street Connellsville, PA 15425 on Wednesday from 12pm until 8pm and on Thursday from 9am until 11am when full Military Honors will be accorded. Immediately following the Military Honors will be the funeral service with Rev. Barry Witt officiating.
Interment will be held privately at a later date in Mt. Tabor Cemetery beside his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to offset the cost of the funeral expenses. Donations can be made to the funeral home via cash, check, credit card, or on David’s personal obituary page through the Donation’s Tab.
