Joseph Zozula Obituary

Joseph Peter Zozula, “Joe”, 82, of Scottdale, passed away peacefully on Thursday November 1, 2018 at Hillside Estates, Connellsville, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 1, 1936 in Scottdale, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Yelenosky) Zozula.

Joe graduated from Scottdale High School in the Class of 1954. Prior to enlisting into the United States Air Force where he proudly served his Country from 1956 until 1960, he was employed at McCrory’s in Scottdale and then later in Carnegie.

Once discharged from the service, he began working for International Paper and then later worked for and retired from Robertshaw.

Joe was a lifelong, devoted member of St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Scottdale where he was the cantor for over 50 years. In addition to being the Cantor, Joe served as an Usher and as a Church Elder.

He dedicated his time and was very conscientious with the care of his church.

He was an avid baseball player and used to play for a church baseball league. He loved the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins. He also was an avid coin collector. He loved going to the casinos and on various bus trips.

He always enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on holidays and during family gatherings.

Joe will fondly be remembered for his gentle, kind demeanor and caring personality towards his family and friends. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish Joe’s memory are his sister, Mary Ann Zozula of Scottdale; sister-in-law, Janet Zozula of Mt. Pleasant; nieces, Patricia McGuire (Jim) of Carnegie, Michelle Moscalink (Charles) of Uniontown, and Marcia Collins (John) of Lemont Furnace; nephews, Paul Michael Zozula (Lynne) of Salem, IN, Kerby Zozula of Ventura, CA, Gregory Zozula (Rhonda) of Claysville and Kevin Zozula (Kathy) of Acme;  several great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Magdaline “Maggie” Tomasko (Michael); brothers, Paul Zozula (Theresa) and Edward Zozula; great-nephew, Kevin McGuire; twin great-nieces, Allison Faith Collins and Becca Hope Collins and great-niece, Sara Zozula.
